Crown reduction in Arcadia
A smaller canopy over your roof and yard, with the tree still standing, in Arcadia.
Send the details
Empire Tree Care reduces the crowns of trees that have outgrown their spot, in Arcadia and across the San Gabriel Valley. Crown reduction makes the top of a tree smaller, so the canopy ends up with less height and less spread than it has now. The tree stays. Only its size changes. Limbs hanging over a roof and a canopy that shades the yard are two reasons a tree can feel too big. Call or text (626) 493-7629 to get an estimate set up. It is the job to ask about when the size is the issue and the tree itself is fine.
That sets it apart from the other work on this site. Tree removal takes the whole tree out. Crown thinning opens up a dense canopy and leaves the size alone. Crown reduction is for the tree that is too big for where it grows, and that you would rather keep than cut down. You may hear it described as cutting a tree back or making it smaller. Tree lacing and tree shaping are close neighbors, and each has a page.
The owner wants proper care for every tree and does not butcher them. That matters most on a job where the tree is staying, because the canopy you leave behind is the tree you will look at every day. Because the tree stays, the result is something you live with every day, so say what you want from it on the first call. Tree trimming & pruning is a separate job with its own page.

What is a crown reduction and who needs one?
A crown reduction is for the tree you want to keep at a smaller size. It cuts a tree back in height or spread. It does not open up the inside of the canopy. If a limb leans on your fence or the branches hang heavy over your roof, the size is the issue, and a reduction addresses the size. The tree is still there afterward, only smaller. If the canopy is too thick rather than too wide, crown thinning may be the closer job.
A reduction leaves the trunk where it is, and the roots stay in the ground. The tree takes up less room over the roof and the fence line. If the size of the tree is what you want to change, this is the page that fits.
How does a crown reduction job go from the first call?
Your call or text gets the estimate on the calendar. Then they arrive and get the job done, and you do a walk-through together. An invoice is given at the end, and that's it. Their text arrives once they have left for your place.
Same day is sometimes possible, in the owner's words "same day sometimes", and it is never a promise. They guarantee clean, safe work, and a promise to fix any damage to your property as soon as possible comes with it. Ask about all of that on the first call, along with what you want the tree to look like.
Does a crown reduction go ahead in the rain?
No. Rain rules out a crown reduction like any other job. The rule bends only for an emergency call about branches that ended up on a house or on a car, and then they will come out in the rain to remove them. The exception is for fallen branches only.
For a tree that has already come down, see fallen tree removal, and for an emergency see emergency tree service. A crown reduction on a standing tree follows the rain rule. Sunday carries no promise of work, and the other six days run 6 AM to 9 PM.
How much does a crown reduction cost?
$500 is the minimum for a crown reduction. A call or text starts the quote and the estimate finishes it. A photo is not part of it. Payment can be cash, card, Zelle or check.
Once the price is given, it stays put. The amount on your invoice is the amount you were told, and the minimum is the only figure to plan around until then. Ask for the full number before you agree to the date. If you are weighing a reduction against removal, ask for the number on each before you decide. For how pricing works across the tree jobs here, Arcadia's tree cost explainer lays it out.
What should you describe when you call about a reduction?
Say what the canopy hangs over, such as the roof, a fence or a neighbor's yard. Say which side feels heaviest, and whether the tree sits close to the house or has room on every side. Mention if a neighbor shares the tree. Say how much smaller you would like the tree to be, even if all you can offer is a comparison, like down to the roofline. Describe how tall it is now against your house, and say if you want to keep the shade or the view in one direction.
If the tree has been cut back before, mention it. If you are not sure you want it kept, say that too, since the tree is staying under a reduction and tree removal is the other path. It helps to know your own answer before you call.
Can I get a crown reduction outside Arcadia?
Yes. Empire Tree Care is based in Arcadia and serves the whole San Gabriel Valley. To check your own town, see the page of every town the owner drives to, up to 45 miles out.
Pasadena is where the owner grew up, and Arcadia is home now. Two of the spots the owner works around are Pasadena City College and BMO Stadium. Both Pasadena and La Cañada Flintridge have pages on this site. Tell them your street and town, and which side of the tree is the problem. A town that is not on the list may still be inside the 45 miles.
How the price works
Call or text (626) 493-7629. Empire Tree Care gets back to you about the work. The number doesn't change once the work starts. Jobs start at $500. More on how pricing works.
Where Empire Tree Care does this
All of the San Gabriel Valley. In San Gabriel, cutting a protected mature tree's height by more than one-fourth over two years takes a city permit, which matters before any crown comes down. The city of Sierra Madre counts removing 25 percent or more of the canopy of a protected tree as substantial trimming that needs a permit.
