Duarte's tree code sets how much you can cut before you pick up the phone. Chapter 13.12 of the municipal code protects most trees, and it allows normal seasonal trimming on less than one-fourth of a tree's foliage. Cut more than that, or take the tree out, and a City-approved Tree Permit is required. The city names the Planning Division as the contact, especially for oak and other native trees, so the permit question comes before the date on oak tree trimming and tree removal. Empire Tree Care is a father and son business, and a Duarte yard is one of the places they go.

Street trees follow the city's schedule. City trees in the public right-of-way are trimmed every fifth year unless a special circumstance comes up, and the city does not trim trees on private property. If a city tree needs a look sooner, call Field Services and staff will inspect it. Your own lot is a different matter. Some properties with a Duarte mailing address are in county territory, generally west of Mountain Avenue and south of Duarte Road, and those owners contact the county Department of Building and Safety.

Fire clearance is the other thing that shapes Duarte tree work. The city's fire page asks owners to remove all dead vegetation within 100 feet of structures and keep ground cover to a maximum of 18 inches in height. Fire services in Duarte are provided by the Los Angeles County Fire Department, and the county's defensible space page adds a cleared 100 foot radius and branches cut back within 5 feet of the roof. The ground rule is brush clearance, and the roof rule is fire safety tree trimming.

Duarte's green container is collected once a week on regular trash days, and it takes tree and shrub trimmings, prunings, brush, twigs and small branches. Extra goes out in your own barrels of 32 gallons or less, or in tied 4 foot by 2 foot bundles, along with the issued green barrel. A larger job leaves more than that, which is when tree debris removal or wood chipping steps in. Trees in Azusa or Monrovia have pages of their own: Azusa and Monrovia.

How Green waste collection works

  • Green waste is collected once a week on regular trash collection days.
  • Excess green waste can go in your own barrels of no more than 32 gallons each, or in tied 4 foot by 2 foot bundles.
  • Excess green waste must go out with the issued green barrel for the collection to be completed.
  • The green container takes grass clippings, tree and shrub trimmings, prunings, weeds, leaves, brush, twigs and small branches.

Questions

Questions about tree service in Duarte.

Who do I call about a tree on city property in Duarte?
Field Services, at the city. A tree in the public right-of-way is on a five year trimming cycle unless something unusual comes up, and staff will inspect it if you ask about earlier work. Your own lot is the one place the city stays out, since the city does not trim trees on private property.
How much of a Duarte tree can I trim without a permit?
Chapter 13.12 allows normal seasonal trimming on less than one-fourth of a tree's foliage. Trimming more than that, or removing a tree, takes a City-approved Tree Permit, so measure the cut before you plan it.
What does a Duarte tree job cost?
Work starts at $500, and a quoted figure does not change once the job begins. The number itself comes from a call or text and a visit. The tree service cost guide covers the rest.
Does a Duarte mailing address always mean the city's rules apply?
No. Some properties with a Duarte mailing address are in county territory, generally west of Mountain Avenue and south of Duarte Road. Check which side of that line your tree stands on before a big cut.
How soon can Empire Tree Care get to Duarte?
The owner's answer is "same day sometimes," never a promise. Call between 6 AM and 9 PM on any day but Sunday.
Is rain a problem for a Duarte tree job?
Yes. Jobs are not done in the rain. An emergency call about limbs that landed on your home or car is the single exception.
